What is Polydipsia?

Polydipsia is the medical term for excessive thirst. It is not a disease in itself, but rather a symptom of a one. It is common in diabetes mellitus but is also known to occur in other endocrine disorders such as diabetes insipidus.

The constant urge to drink may be one of the early symptoms of diabetes. If you find you are drinking a lot for no apparent reason look out for other common symptoms of diabetes.

  • Are you also rushing to the loo for a pee more often than you usually do?
  • Are you losing weight despite eating the same amount of food?

If so, it is a good idea to get checked out by your health care professional.

If you are diagnosed with diabetes the thirst will quickly disappear with the right treatment.

Remember, the earlier you are diagnosed the earlier you can gain control and the less likely you will be to suffer severe complications.
