What are Ketones?

Ketones or ketone bodies are produced when the body burns fat rather than glucose for energy.

If a you haven't eaten for 12 to 18 hours your body will begin to break down your reserve energy that's stored as fat. As a result of this, your urine will test positive whether you are diabetic or not.

This is a perfectly normal reaction to the body burning fat and in a non-diabetic it is not a dangerous condition. However, if you are diabetic it is likely to be an indicator that your control is not good.

If you do not have enough insulin to provide your cells with the glucose they need, you will begin to burn fat. This is one of the reasons you lose weight when your diabetes is poorly controlled.

If you do not get the insulin you need, your blood sugar levels will rise and your body will begin to use its fat stores for fuel which will lead to ketosis.

If your urine tests positive and your blood sugar is high seek medical advise at once. Insufficient insulin can lead to a dangerous condition called diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA).
